PostSubject: Munch's Oddysee: The good and the bad.   Wed Oct 08, 2008 2:23 am

Thought I'd make a thread to get the forum started. Smile

So anyway, what did you like/dislike about Munch's Oddysee? I thought it was a good, enjoyable game that's worth playing. I liked some of the challanges you had to do and thought it was funny when possessing Snoozers because you could shoot everything you came across. However the the sounds when Munch hopped got very annoying very fast, and I think overall everything was a bit too cartoony. Also, somethings tended to get repetetive and boring, such as the Meep herding and the level at the end where you have to rescue the egg crates. Overall it was a good game, but perhaps not the best Oddworld game.

Now tell me what you think!

I agree, it's too cartoony, unlike the AO & AE which were incredibly dark.

Also I found the game play a bit repetitive.

To be honest, it was only because I stumbled upon a cheap second-hand Xbox that I managed to finaly play MO and SW.

Munch's Oddysee was one of the first games on the Xbox if my sources are correct. So it wasn't the best, but it did have some things that were kind of fun. Most of the game was cartoony but at an enjoyable amount. Despite that the previous games had had humour packed into the darkness of the games without making it dark humour, Munch's Oddysee had alot of cool 3D landscapes and a reasonable amount of different levels. Even though there was alot of repetetive gameplay it was the kind of gameplay that can always add new challenges for the better or worse. Some levels were ridiculously easy. Others were very challenging and toook a really long time to complete. The enemies weren't as menacing in 3D as they were in 2D. The wildlife range was a little low and the mudokon classes were not my idea of a good idea. Even though it had it's bad moments it had some very very very good ones as well. The Big Bro sligs were an interesting addition. Vykker suits was an ingenious last level. The ending scenes was great even if it'd be cooler to play it rather than watch. Most of the levels had alot of fun in them even if it was repetetive. The worst parts of this game were the awful AI, the slackened atmosphere, and the fight gameplay. Fighting should not even have been possible, purely because it would follow up better to the first two games. AI was so basic compared to the sophisticated and individual AI of the first games. Atmosphere may have been harder to create in 3D but... That doesn't mean it couldn't have been better. Some of the big industrial buildings looked on the outside like what might be a badly made mueseum, little castle ride, or just a warehouse. The first two games contained cutscenes of true monster buildings. Rupture Farms looked like what may have been made on the moon with bits of cars and whatever they could scavenge up. But Munch's Oddysee wasn't a total failure.
Overall: 3/5 A game worth picking up to play.

Wow...big post.
I agree with you, especially the game AI thing. Also it annoyed me that the Paramites sounded like Pigs and the Scrabs sounded like they had sore throats.

I've never actually noticed sounds being messed up in Munch's Oddysee. And a paramite sounds a bit like a pig squelling at a very high frequancy, sped up, and reversed. I have only just made that realization.

I got MO on Ebay, and I'll get it very soon. Then, I'll be able to post what I've thought of it after getting Perfect Quarma. This thread should be stickied, because this is a very popular topic, and because it's the first OD thread.

I managed to get Angelic Quarma first go; it's really not difficult. But good luck anyway.

I don't think this should be stickied. There's only three threads in this forum anyway, so there would be no point.

I finally got MO, and I decided to first beat quickly, and then beat it again and get Perfect Quarma. The controls are easy to get used to, but I keep dying in fights with Interns, and when I die, the Fuzzles that I use to fight die too, so now I have Bad Quarma. I am on Mudokon Pens.

I found the game incredibely easy for a couple of reasons.
1. Easy controls. A very good thing.
2. Nice and simple.
3. Fights could be won by fighting alone. After death you'd come back nearby but the enemies wouldn't.
4. The save portals are easy to find. Unless you either deliberately kill the mudokons or just don't save them you will get good quarma.
5. It's not too long.

The only real challenges on this game are if your trying to get either bad quarma or perfect quarma. Eventually you'll just screw up.

I maybe think that MO is better than the first 2 because it's more realistic. I don't see anything wrong with the backgrounds.

It's ok, I've stickied it now. Though I don't think it should be stickied I will fulfill the wishes of this (rather small) community.

One problem with MO in my opinion are the textures of the environments and characters. They just seem cartoony and, well, fake. Thenagain the game was brought out in 2001, and game graphics back then weren't very good anyway.

The only characters that look fake are the Slogs. The environments look better than in the first 2 games.

At the end, how do you tell if you got Perfect Quarma, and not Angelic Quarma?
